About Unbuckled

Unbuckled.org was founded to provide legal support to caregivers balancing the demands of employment while ensuring their children receive the care they deserve. By connecting caregivers and employers with expert legal aid, we facilitate understanding and protect rights during challenging times.

Becca's Story

In March 2023, Becca and Blain Newton’s 3-year-old son Averil was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Two weeks later Becca was informed her only option was to take an unpaid medical leave of absence with no return date secured. A week later there was an attempt to fire her. Fortunately, she had a network that included legal resources who enabled her to self-advocate and navigate the situation for a more desirable outcome.

While her story is not unique, Becca became acutely aware of how critical her network was, especially in a time of crisis. In the following weeks, the idea for Unbuckled was born.

Why Unbuckled?

Freedom

A sense of freedom. A release from constraints and limitations. When not on his IV pole, Ave refers to himself as “Unbuckled.”

Insecurity

Insecurity and vulnerability. The lack of restraint can leave you exposed and unprotected. These feelings are strong when dealing with the news of a child's diagnosis.

Strength

Symbolic of Ave’s port, and the important role it plays in his survival. Peonies have a dramatic journey from a closed little ball to a full healthy flower.
